Outline of event

Pupils will engage in competitive academic board game competitions. Competitions will be split into chess, scrabble and uno tournaments, each with a different format:

  • Chess = ‘Blitz’ chess format. Students will compete in round-robin tournaments where they will play a member from each house once. Participants will be organised into respective age groups (G6&7, G8&9, G10-12) and each age group will have 2 tournaments (Tournament A & Tournament B).
  • Scrabble = traditional rules of the game. Students will be split into age groups and there will be 2 games in each age group.
  • UNO = traditional rules of the game.  Students will be split into age groups and there will be 2 games in each age group.

Rules & Timings

Chess = Each match will last a maximum of 15minutes. Participants will have a maximum of 30secs per move. Failure to complete a move in this time will result in the opposition player taking their turn again. Match will be won by achieving a check-mate. If this is not achieved then games will be decided by the number of pieces captured by adding up the value of each piece. In the event that both participants are equal in all of the above then the match will be classified as a draw.

Piece values: Pawn 1 point; Rook 5 points; Knight & Bishop 3 points; Queen 9 points.

Scrabble = Each game will have no time limit and will be played to completion of tiles. Students will play under the normal rules of the game and record their word scores. At the completion of the game, a new game will begin. Scores will rollover into the new game. The student with the highest amount of points will be declared the winner with the players ranked 1st to 4th within their game.

UNO = Each game will have no time limit and will be played until one player manages to lay all of their cards. The remaining players should then add the value of the cards they have remaining in their hand (action cards count as 10). Students keep the scores running until the end of the event. The student with the lowest combined score is the winner, second lowest score is 2nd continuing, third lowest score is 3rd and the player with the highest score comes 4th.

Scoring

Chess = Students will be awarded 3 points for a win & 1 point for a draw. In each age group tournament, houses will be ranked 1st - 4th based on points won combined from both the A and B tournaments (most points wins).

1st place will be awarded 1 point, 2nd place 2 points, 3rd place 3 points and 4th place 4 points. The total points from all three age groups will then be added together and houses will be ranked in order from 1st to 4th based on the lowest score (least points wins).

Scrabble = Students will be ranked 1st to 4th in their respective games based on total points won (most points wins).

1st place will be awarded 1 point, 2nd place 2 points, 3rd place 3 points and 4th place 4 points. The total combined points for each house will added together (G6 - G10/11) and houses will be ranked 1st - 4th based on points won (least points wins).

UNO = Students will be ranked 1st to 4th in their respective games based on total points won (most points wins).

1st place will be awarded 1 point, 2nd place 2 points, 3rd place 3 points and 4th place 4 points. The total combined points for each house will added together (G6 - G10/11) and houses will be ranked 1st - 4th based on points won (least points wins).
